A redesign is a good moment to fix problems, and an easy moment to create new ones. A short audit beforehand protects what already works.
Before design starts
- List the pages that bring in visitors and enquiries today, and keep their URLs or plan redirects
- Decide the one or two actions a visitor should take on each page
- Collect the content you actually have, rather than designing around placeholder text
- Check how the current site performs on a mid-range phone
During the build
- Write real page titles and descriptions as you go
- Test forms, links and the mobile menu on real devices
- Compress images and avoid loading scripts you do not need
Launching with redirects, working forms and basic analytics is more important than launching with every feature.
